What are the Australian income tax rates for 2026-27?
For Australian residents in 2026-27: income up to $18,200 is tax-free, income from $18,201 to $45,000 is taxed at 15% (cut from 16% on 1 July 2026), $45,001 to $135,000 at 30%, $135,001 to $190,000 at 37%, and income over $190,000 at 45%. The Medicare Levy of 2% generally applies on top.

How much is the Medicare Levy in Australia?
The Medicare Levy is 2% of taxable income for most taxpayers. Low-income earners pay a reduced levy or none at all: below the single low-income threshold no levy applies, and it phases in at 10 cents per dollar above the threshold until the full 2% rate is reached.

When do HELP (HECS) student loan repayments start in 2026-27?
Under the marginal repayment system, no compulsory HELP repayment applies on 2026-27 repayment income up to $69,528. You repay 15 cents per dollar of income between $69,528 and $129,717, then 17 cents per dollar above $129,717. Once income exceeds $186,050 the repayment is 10% of total repayment income.

When is my Australian tax return due?
Self-lodged individual tax returns for the 2025-26 financial year are due by 31 October 2026. If you lodge through a registered tax agent and are on their books before that date, later lodgement dates usually apply.
